Joe Holley
is a longtime journalist who currently writes the “Native Texan” column for the Houston Chronicle. He joined the Chronicle in 2009 as politics editors and became a columnist and editorial writer in 2013.

Holley has been an award-winning editorial page editor and columnist for newspapers in San Diego and San Antonio, editor of the Texas Observer, frequent contributor to Texas Monthly and staff writer for the Washington Post. He was Ann Richards’ speechwriter when she was governor of Texas and has taught journalism at several universities. He also has authored several books, including the recently released, “Slingin’ Sam: The Life and Times of the Greatest Quarterback to Ever Play the Game.” His first novel, "The Purse Bearer: A Novel of Love, Lust and Texas Politics" is due out
in May 2014.

Holley is a native Texas, born and raised in Waco. He received his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University and master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Columbia University. Holley has four grown children and lives in Houston with his partner, Laura.
